Spring is Here!

Posted by Arowhon Friends on April 28, 2014

Posted by Arowhon Friends

Despite roller coaster temperatures, freak April snow falls and a still frozen Little Joe Lake, we feel the warmth of spring around the bend. The snow is disappearing with each day, there are gray jays sitting on eggs and the male Spruce Grouses are putting on a show to impress the females. We are moving full speed ahead to get our opening team and plans together. This year, we open on Friday, May 30th. We hope to see you!

parkbus-logo-opt.jpgWere you aware that there is an alternative, less expensive and “greener” way to travel to Algonquin Park from Toronto or Ottawa? PARK BUS (www.parkbus.com) runs from June to October. Pre-booking your trip is recommended in July or August as the bus fills with young backpackers keen to see the north. We’ll happily meet you at the Portage Store at Canoe Lake and drive you into Arowhon Pines free of charge. We hope that you don’t mind a ride in our pickup truck!

In March, I traveled with my family to Mexico, to the Michoacan province to see the El Rosario monarch butterfly sanctuary high in the mountains, and to the Yucatan, for the seaside and Mayan culture. Enjoying meals at the outdoor markets was our favorite thing to do. It was wonderful to see families engaged in food preparation at all levels and the passion with which they cooked. In Michoacan, we enjoyed delicious clear mushroom soup, pork cutlets with crackling, fried cactus, and a variety of stewed beef and pork dishes, all served with fresh tortillas and various salsas depending on mom's recipe. In the Yucatan, there was delicious chicken, lime and tortilla soup, fresh fried fish, crisp tacos with Turkey, and my favorite - slow roasted pork, cooked wrapped in banana leaves in a charcoal pit, served with bread or fresh tortillas and pickled onions. Food was celebrated on every corner! So inspired, back in Canada, we’re testing recipes for our own corn tortillas, soups, and tacos! Ola!

With Love from Arowhon

Posted by Theresa on October 13, 2013

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Tomorrow we will be closing the gates after another season.  It's a good time to count our blessings.

Thank you beautiful Algonquin Park.

Thank you Little Joe Lake sunrises, mists and sunsets.

Thank you for the chance encounters with wildlife - moose, beavers, otters, herons, turtles, the Arowhon Road fox, the birth and rearing of the family of loons, fall grey jays eating from our hands.

Thank you monarch butterfly whom we saw magically transform from a little blue caterpillar.

Thank you staff - always polite, gracious, hardworking and caring, who genuinely love being here.  We could not have asked for a better group of men and women.

Finally, thank you to the best guests in the world.  We hope that you know that you are more than just past of our business.  Many of you take the time to tell us how we can improve and share your ideas and thoughts.  You are great huggers, and as happy as we are to catch up with you when you arrive, we are equally as sad to see you leave.  Thank you.  Until next season...

With love from Arowhon

Autumn Photos at Arowhon Pines - The fall leaves are peaking!

Posted by Theresa on September 24, 2013

Arowhon mornings have been chilly, misty and gorgeous - I think I took a hundred photos just this morning.  The days are sunny with temperatures reaching 22 degrees this week, perfect for canoeing, kayaking and hiking.  There were three otters in the bog at the Crossroads and the beavers have been very active.  Did I mention that the fall colours are spectacular?!!!

Bring your cameras!

Amusing OUT OF OFFICE: AUTOMATIC REPLY

Posted by admin on September 7, 2013

Here is an amusing OUT OF OFFICE: AUTOMATIC REPLY that a guest sent to all his emails:

"I will be along the lakes, rivers and forests of our Canadian National Parks for the next week.  Sadly, there is no internet, telephone, fax, iAnything out there.  There is a trading post somewhere with a computer, but it will be used very sparingly."

Cheers to a truly UNPLUGGED Algonquin vacation! (Applause)

Peaceful Arowhon Pines

Posted by Theresa on September 2, 2013

Something happened today between lunch and dinner.

The noise level dropped , as did our occupancy. Trippers packed their gear and headed home.  Golden rod and asters are in bloom.  Some maple trees have already fully changed colour.  There are fewer hummingbirds on the verandah.  The baby loons are teenagers now and think they know everything about life.

Peace and quiet has returned to the trails and lakes.

If this is YOUR time of the season, grab your sweater and see you around the fireplace.

Butterfly Garden

Posted by admin on July 21, 2013

We have recently registered the grounds at Arowhon Pines as a monarch butterfly waystation, with www.monarchwatch.com.

We will be launching the start of butterfly tagging season on Monday, August 5th, 2013, at our annual 100 Mile Challenge Barbecue.  Our goal in the next few months is to to tag as many butterflies as we can - and if/when "our" butterflies arrive in Mexico, we will be sent an email confirmation!

The new garden is up by the tennis courts and has both attractor and nesting plants.  It will grow bigger and more beautiful every year!

Hope to see you soon!

Storm Watch Algonquin

Posted by Theresa on July 19, 2013

Storms have knocked out power and our telephone lines.  We'll be making occasional trips down the road to check on phone messages, but the best way to contact us is by email - resort@arowhonpines.ca.

Despite the storm, guests are enjoying the cooler temperatures and romantic meals by candlelight.
